The Bbopgi Game: A Fun Korean Golf Betting Game for High Handicappers

⛳ A Fun, Random, and Beginner-Friendly Korean Golf Tradition

What Is the Bbopgi Game?

If you’re new to golf betting in Korea, you might hear someone say,
“Let’s play bbopgi today.”

It’s a game I personally learned when I first started playing for money —
and it’s perfect for golfers with very different skill levels.

Why?
Because bbopgi isn’t about skill alone — luck plays a huge role.

๐Ÿ”„ How It Works

The game is played without handicaps (no “strokes given”) because the randomness naturally evens things out. The basic concept is similar to skins:

  • Each hole has a set prize (money, drinks, or points).

  • The winning team for that hole takes the prize.

The twist? The teams don’t stay the same.

1. Team Selection (after playing each hole)

  • Use 5 sticks (or cards) to decide teams after playing each hole:

    • 2 red sticks (Team Red)

    • 2 blue sticks (Team Blue)

    • 1 black stick (the “Joker”)

  • The black stick acts as a wild card — often counted as a bogey regardless of actual score, but the group can decide the rule in advance.

2. New Teams Every Hole

  • At the end of each hole, everyone draws again.

  • Teams change constantly, so you might be paired with (or against) anyone each time.

๐Ÿ’ก Why Koreans Love It

  • Fun for All Levels → A single bad hole won’t ruin your round.

  • Social → Teams mix every hole, so you interact with everyone.

  • Beginner-Friendly → High handicappers won’t feel pressured about “dragging down” their team.

In fact, when I was a beginner, I always prayed to draw the Joker —
so my partner wouldn’t get stuck with my triple bogey... (sad story)

Pros & Cons

๐Ÿ‘ Pros

  • Great icebreaker for mixed-skill groups

  • Keeps the vibe light and friendly

  • Adds excitement to every hole

๐Ÿ‘Ž Cons

  • Pure luck can frustrate skilled players

  • Not ideal for serious competitive rounds

๐ŸŒ️My Take

When I first played Bbopgi at a course in Incheon, I was shocked at how fast the vibe changed each hole.
One minute, I was high-fiving my partner for sinking a long putt; the next, we were opponents fighting for the same prize.

It’s not the most “serious” way to play golf — but it’s perfect if you want a social, high-energy round where anyone has a chance to win, as it turns every hole into a fresh start..

If you’re in Korea and someone suggests bbopgi, try it at least once —
you might find yourself laughing more than you’ve ever laughed on a golf course.
